Description
Palestine, British Mandate, Currency Board Presentation Double Proof Set (14), 1927, London mint, including two Proofs of each: silver 100 Mils, silver 50 Mils, copper-nickel 20 Mils, copper-nickel 10 Mils, copper-nickel 5 Mils, bronze 2 Mils and bronze 1 Mil (KM PS1, KM 1-7). Uncirculated, in the original red case of issue of Palestine Currency Board (14).
An extremely rare double Proof Set of which only 32 sets are recorded in the original case according to Krause. It is thought that two additional sets could have been formed from single Proof sets, potentially bringing the number up to 34. One of these sets was issued in a different presentation case for King George V especially. This was all recorded in a document (available online and upon request) issued on 7th February 1928 from the Palestine Currency Board to the Master of the Mint which outlined the account of preparation of dies for these coins and specimen sets.
Each coin in the set has a gentle Proof finish and is executed to the highest quality standards. The coins have developed beautiful red and golden toning over the years and this set has never appeared on the market before. It is thought that out of 34 sets initially made, only 15 or less survive today. Some are not likely to be complete as this one. For instance, last one we have seen on the market in 2023 was impaired with one 2 Mils missing and sold by Spink for $24,000. This set is complete and as such an immense rarity.
