Description
Aylesbury, Francis Wheeler Halfpenny (1795). Justice seated right, holding sword and scales, rev. county arms – a swan, edge PAYABLE . AT . F. WHEELER . AYLESBURY. BUCKS : 28mm/9.12gm. (DH 3a), good Extremely Fine, considerable amount of original mint lustre, unrecorded, unique ?
Ex. F S Cokayne Col., his ticket.
The edge legend on this coin is made up of individually punched letters and certainly they have not been done in the process of manufacturing the coin - as born witness by the way the edge curls over at each punch. Is this some sort of trial for a possible edge or just someone 'playing around' - or as Cokayne records on his ticket ‘a faked edge’ ? It was certainly done very early in the coin’s ‘life’ so it would not be unreasonable to conject that this is some sort of trial for a possible edge legend.
