Description
Macclesfield, Contemporary counterfeit of a Roe & Co. Halfpenny 1792. Draped bust of Charles Roe right, rev. industry seated left holding auger and cogwheel, edge PAYABLE AT MACCLESFIELD LIVERPOOL OR CONGLETON .x., 30mm/12.82gm. (DH 67). Another similar but no period after date on obv. 30.5mm/11.22gm. (DH 68). Another similar but minor variations, 30mm/11.89gm. (DH 70). Another similar but edge, PAYABLE IN LONDON LIVERPOOL OR BRISTOL, 29.5mm/9,78gm. (DH 71), DH 67 and 68 good Extremely Fine with considerable amounts of mint bloom (usual obv. die flaw on second), DH 70 and 71 Extremely Fine with some original colour last three Rare [4].
DH 68 & 71 ex F S Cokayne Col., his tickets, second bought 9 Dec. 1905 for 7/6. From J Atkins (who reported “no other known”). Acquired AHB c. 1946
