Description
A Contemporarily, Beautifully Engraved Miniature Indian Mutiny Medal attributed to Captain Edwin Harmar, 32nd (Cornwall) Regiment of Foot, an Original Defender of Lucknow who was disabled by wounds on the 19th of July 1857, comprising Miniature Indian Mutiny Medal 1857-58, one clasp, Defence of Lucknow, (Capt. Edwin Harmar 32nd Lt Inf), privately engraved in upright capitals, lightly toned, very fine (1).
The Regiment defended Lucknow from July to November 1857, Victoria Crosses being awarded to William Dowling, Henry Gore‑Browne, Samuel Lawrence and Willian Oxenham. The Regiment's Commanding Officer, Colonel John Inglis, was in overall command of the Lucknow Residency during the Siege. The Regiment was subsequently re‑titled the 32nd (Cornwall) Regiment of Foot (Light Infantry) in recognition of its contribution during the rebellion. The Regiment consisted of 19 Officers and 517 Other Ranks.
Edwin Harmar was the son of William and Emma Harmar, baptised in the Parish of St Pancras in 1836, at which time his father was a wine merchant. In the Army Lists for the 32nd Foot, Edwin is shown as Ensign 23rd March 1855, Lieutenant 15th of June 1855, Captain 23rd of March 1858. In the Battalion auctions@baldwin.co.uk 85 +44 (0)20 7930 6879 Medal Rolls, he is noted as a Defender and that he was wounded at Lucknow on the 19th of July 1857; his papers record that he was disabled for two years. He died at about the age of 39 on the 10th of September 1875 at Norbiton, Surrey, leaving £15210 to his father William.
