An India, Tirah, Punjab Frontier, Boer War, Trio renamed to Private J. Pickford 2nd and 1st Battalions, Derby and Notts & Derby Regiment, comprising India Medal 1895‑1902, QVR, two clasps, Tirah 1897-98, Punjab Frontier 1897-98, (Pte: J. Pickford 2/ Derby Rgt:), Queen’s South Africa Medal, 2nd type, ghost dates, 5 clasps: Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Johannesburg, Diamond Hill, Wittebergen, (3256 Pte: J. Pickford 1/ Notts/Dby. Rgt.), King’s South Africa Medal, two clasps: South Africa 1901, South Africa 1902, (3256 Pte. J. Pickford 1. Notts/ Dby. Rgt:), edge scuffs, heavily toned, renamed in engraved capitals, fine. (3).
John Pickford joined The Sherwood Foresters (Derbyshire Regiment) on the 5th of September 1891, he stated that he was 18 years and 6 months old, a native of Derby and a Collier by Trade. He was imprisoned twice and fined by District Courts Martial once for Breaking out of Camp, Striking a Superior Officer, and Disobeying an Order.
He served Home from the 5th of September 1891 to the 1st of March 1893, East Indies 2nd of March 1893 to 2nd of March 1899, Home 3rd of March 1899 to the 120th of November 1899, South Africa 11th of November 1899 to the 16th of August 1902, Home 17th of August 1902 to the 4th of September 1903 when he completed his 12 years’ service and was Discharged to the Reserve. His papers confirm India Medal with two clasps, and South Africa Medal with 4 clasps. An anomaly. He re-joined the Army, 2nd Home Service Battalion West Yorkshire Regiment as a Special Reservist on the 27th of August 1914 giving his name as John Riley Alias Pickford and was found fit to serve in the 3rd Battalion Sherwood Foresters. He transferred to the West Yorks on the 27th of January 1917 and then transferred to the Royal Defence Corps on the 1st of September 1917. He was discharged under King’s Rules and Regulations – No Longer Physically fit for War Service and was awarded a pension and Silver War Badge no 301,744.
