Description
The Scinde Medal awarded to Private John Fortune, 22nd Regiment comprising Scinde Medal 1843, reverse Meeanee, Hyderabad 1843, (John Fortune, 22nd Regt.), fitted with replacement silver clip and silver straight bar suspension toned fine (1)
John Fortune, a Tailor from Dublin, enlisted into the 33rd Regiment on the 25th of July 1840. Transferred to the 22nd Regiment on the 1st of January 1841 and served with them in India for 12 years. He fought at Meeanee and Hyderabad, Papers confirm and a further engagement which is illegible on his Service Papers. He was Discharged at his own request after 21 years’ service on the 16th of August 1861. His papers state “he is not in possession of a Good Conduct Badge as his name appears 29 times in the Regimental Defaulters Book”. He was admitted as an Out Pensioner to the Chelsea Hospital in 1861.
