The Extremley Rare China 1900 Medal awarded to Lieutenant, later Major, Denzil Ibbotson Michael Macaulay 1st Bengal Lancers (Skinners Horse) comprising China Medal 1900, one clasp, Relief of Pekin, (Lieut. D.I.M. Macaulay. 1st Bl. Lcrs.), toned very fine (1)
Major D.I.M. Macaulay was present at the actions of Peitsang and Yangtsun in the final relief of Pekin. The 1st Bengal Lancers (Skinners Horse) made some brilliant charges during the course of the Boxer Rebellion, on one occasion “cutting up the Tartar Cavalry and capturing three Standards and some cannon”. They also participated in a joint mounted attack with some American Cavalry, this being the first occasion on a field of Battle that the forces of India and served alongside those of the U.S.A., Macaulay is also credited with services against the Swatis and Mohmands in 1915.
Denzil Ibbetson Michael Macaulay was born at Ban- koora, in 1871 ; Attended University College Oxford, he was Commissioned Lieutenant on the 10th of January 1897 and whilst serving with the 1st Duke of York’s Own Bengal Lancers received the China Medal with clasp Relief pf Pekin. In 1903 He transferred to 1st Duke of York’s Own Lancers (Skinner’s Horse) and was promoted to Captain 10th of October 1903. Being Promoted to Major 10th of October 1912. He Died in Brighton on the 7th of October 1934
