5th Lancer’s charge at Elandslaagte
The 5th Lancers played a significant role in the Boer War, particularly during the charge at Elandslaagte on 21st October 1899. The Boers had captured the railway station at Elandslaagte, cutting off Ladysmith and Dundee's communications. The British response was a swift and decisive one, involving dismounted units from the Imperial Light Horse and three Battalions of regular infantry. As the Boers began to retreat, the 5th Lancers charged three times, resulting in the capture of two field guns and the death of many Boers. This charge is remembered as a pivotal moment in the Boer War, showcasing the bravery and skill of the 5th Lancers in the face of adversity.
Frederick Haston joined the 5th Lancers on the 9th of April 1894 stating that he was a 21-year-old Plater from Middlesbrough. He served in India from the 13th of September 1894 to the 4th of March 1898, and South Africa from the 5th of March 1898 to the 4th of March 1902. Then returning Home he transferred to the Ar my Reserve in November 1902 and was finally Demobilised on the 8th of April 1906 after 12 years’ service.
