Description
Newspaper Tax: 1765 (1 Nov.) 1d red, proof impression on laid paper, position 156 on the plate, showing 'AMERICA' inscription at top. Extremely rare with few in Private hands. The issued stamps were directly printed onto on newspapers, pamphlets and almanacs to show tax paid. Issued as a result of the Stamp Act 1765 to contribute towards the costs of defending the American Colonies from the French, opposition to the tax was swift and major rioting took place where the famous rallying cry of "No taxation without representation" was born. So unpopular was the tax that it was abandoned May 1 the following year, but relations with the American Colonies had been irreparably soured and The Stamp Act proved to be the first link in the chain of events which caused the War of Independence in 1775. A rare proof of utmost historic importance, one of c.20 in private hands.
