Description
Telegraph. 1886 (11 Jan) printed "GOVERNMENT TELEGRAPH DEPARTMENT" document (c.165x200mm, with imprint "20-9-84" on reverse), completed in M/S, from H.Macleane, Asst Superintendent in charge Bombay Office, to The Chief Superintendent, Check Office Calcutta, bearing 1882 second wmk 50r carmine WHOLE STAMP, applied horizontally and tied by "BOMBAY 11-1-86" straight line datestamp. On arrival at Calcutta, the stamp was further tied by a line of punched holes, and by very fine framed "CHECK OFFICE" H/S in blue-black, with very fine blue "GOVERNMENT OF INDIA / CHECK / OFFICE / TELEGRAPH DEPARTMENT" oval H/S dated "15 JAN.86" applied at upper left. The M/S message explains that the 50r stamp paid the one-off registration fee for the telegraphic address "Orange" (in a box at left) for all time (underlined), for use by Messrs Sorabjee, Husserwanjee, Tullati & Co, Bombay. The document somewhat toned, with odd minor wormholes, and officially backed by cellophane for archival storage, nevertheless a wonderful and fascinating usage of the highest interest and rarity. The first such item we have ever handled. SG T41.
