Description
Tribal Taxes; Ukuambi. Four Registration cards, the first with payments for 1935-1940 with six 1936 5/- revenues with silver bars overprinted "UKUAMBI" in black, two stamps affected by card creasing and one with filing punch holes; the second with three stamps removed from the card, and the tax for 1943 and 1944 paid with two 1931 ½d bird postage stamps the first surcharged with the small 5/- under the tribal name in red and the second with the large 5/- over the tribal name in red (with a torn corner), a bi-lingual pair of c.1940 1d blue and red postage stamps with diamonds covering the postal value and small 5/- under the tribe name in black paying the tax for 1949 and 1950, the tax for 1946 being marked as "Exempted"; the third card with a pair of 1931 1½d postage stamps surcharged with the small black 5/- under the tribe name paying the tax for 1945-1946, the top stamp being damaged by the card crease and the top of the card has a rough tear; the sturdy fourth card has a green linen-like surface and the tax for 1970 to 1977 is paid by several yellow labels stuck down on top of each other, that show the tax for 1976-1977 was two rands (R2.00) a year.
