Lot 65
1893 Bermuda 'One Penny' Registered Postcard Registered to Germany

Stamps & Covers of the World | 5951
Auction: Day 1
Description
1893 provisional "One Penny" surcharge on ½d Stone and 1p Dull rose, Victorian adhesives (S.G. 19, 22), exceptionally UPRATED for Registration with 2d aniline purple, and sent to Aull, Germany, the stamps tied to card by “Hamilton/1” Duplex cancellation, with block ‘R’ duplex cancel at lower left and ‘London/Registered’ transit hs dated 27 December. Believed to be the sole example of this very rare provisional postcard sent via registered post. Existing stocks of postcards had the ‘One Penny’ surcharge applied as a result of the reduction in the overseas postcard rate to 1d. The vast majority of those surcharged were on the 1885 1½d red card (H&G 4/4a), and it is believed that just 80 of this type of card were surcharged, only a handful of which were used. A key showpiece for any Bermuda Stationery collection. Higgins & Gage 6 (Priced $750 used in 1976!)
SRN: Since describing this lot we have been made aware that a second example is known.
