Description
1966 FIFA World Cup ephemera, including a Official Souvenir Programme for the competition (July 11-30), a letter from The Postmaster General, Edward Short to Paul Adorian, who had suggested that should England win the trophy, the GPO should overprint some World Cup stamps in celebration. Accompanying is a clipping from The Guardian confirming the source of the idea. In the letter the PG thanks Mr Adorian for the suggestion and later provided a Harrision & Sons folder containing two blocks of 4. Further items concerning a bet between Sir Stanley Rous and Lord Harewood concerning England possibly reaching the 1970 final in Mexico! (Sadly they did not). A most interesting group for soccer fans and philatelists alike. Good to fine.
