Description
1882 German Empire telegram dated ‘’5.3.82'' sent by Queen Victoria addressed to a Mademioselle at the court of the Palace of the Crown Prince, Berlin. In gratitude to the message they had sent in response to a failed assassination attempt on the Queen as she disembarked the Royal Train at Windsor in March 1882. The message reads ‘’many thanks for the kind telegram and congratulations on my merciful escape .+ the queen windsor castle .'' The failed assassin Roderick Maclean's motive was purportedly due to a curt reply from the Royal Household to some poetry he had written for the Queen. He was charged with high treason and found guilty but insane and lived out the remainder of his days in Broadmoor Asylum. Odd stains, paper splits (sensibly reinforced by hinges) and stains to telegram, also includes original envelope. Still a very scarce and interesting item.
