Description
‘Terra Nova’ Expedition. 1913 (JA 18) registered cover (with contents) from E.G.H.R. Evans to Commander R.H. Walter at the Admiralty, London, subsequently redirected to H.M.S. ‘Minerva’ at Portsmouth, franked by Victoria Land 1911-13 1d carmine (3 - single and horizontal pair), tied by two strikes of ‘BRIT. ANTARCTIC EXPD.’ cds with blue/white registration label alongside, backstamped at Lyttelton and Christchurch (12 FE), London (21 MR) and Portsmouth (MR 25); the letter, written on official Expedition notepaper and headed “In the pack ice, Lat 71° 40's Long 166° 0's, Sunday Jan 5 13”, with details of the journey to New Zealand, the fitting out of the ‘Terra Nova’, the discovery of a stowaway, and their arrival at the edge of the ice; the envelope with a few imperfections, nevertheless a fine letter from the Captain of the ‘Terra Nova’.
