Description
c.1872 South Kensington Exhibition, the magnificent set of 10 stamp-size die proofs of the 1857-59 issue to 2s (less the 1d value which does not exist thus) plus 1857-64 ½d on glazed card in colours close to those used for the issued stamps, eleven values, prepared by DLR using the original Perkins Bacon dies and probably produced for display at the 1872 or 1873 South Kensington Exhibition. A wonderful group of the highest rarity, and unique in private hands. Of the three sets recorded, one is in the British Library collection (and lacks the 5d value) and the other (ex Fleming, Dale-Liechtenstein, Samuel and Kimmel) is overprinted ‘SPECIMEN’.
