Description
1856 4ct black on magenta-surfaced paper used from Williamstown (A 3 C coded date stamp, rather unclear, both cancelling the stamp and used as backstamp), hinged to envelope to London. The stamp inverted in relation to the envelope and with margins all round. Initialled EDW (= Wight). Backstamped Demerara MY 10 1856 and London arrival of 5 JU. RPS Certificate (1991). SG 24, £25000
Few covers with this stamp are known, perhaps five or six. Just two are to overseas destinations, and only this one from a village. The adhesive paid the local postage to Demerara, the bold '6' on the front of the envelope indicating the packet rate, due from the addressee
