Description
1942 large registered OHMS envelope (13 x 10", ‘On His Majesty’s Service' crossed out in red) bearing 2d scarlet, 2/- Seal, 5/- thin striated paper and 1938 £1 deep grey-green and black with Nassau CDSs of 6 OCT 42. Boxed AIR MAIL/ VIA TRANSATLANTIC CLIPPER and oval BAHAMAS IMPERIAL/ MINISTY OF WAR/ TRANSPORT/ LIGHTHOUSE SERVICE both in red. Central fold, expected wear including lower right corner missing, but a truly exceptional item; the 1938 £1 must be very rare on a commercial cover, and the 5/- striated paper is believed to be unique on any sort of cover. The sender was Commander Ronald Langton-Jones, R.N. After distinguished service in the First World War he retired from the Royal Navy in 1928, when he was posted to the Bahamas, to serve as Inspector of the Imperial Lighthouse Service
