Description
1856 Overseas mail. Fine wrapper to Shanghai, prepaid at the 6d per ½oz rate for a cover routed via Southampton by a block of six 1d Red-brown Pl.29, neatly cancelled by blue "905" Wolverhampton numeral, the postal clerk realising his mistake cancels them again in black ink. The reverse shows a blue Wolverhampton cds for OC.1.1856, a London transit cds for the 2nd and a Hong Kong receiver for DE.1.1856.
Routed via Southampton the letter was carried by P&O steamers "Pera" (Southampton-Alexandria), "Hindostan" (Suez-Galle), "Norna" (Galle-Hong Kong) and "Erin" (Hong Kong-Shanghai). Some minor cover imperfections but a rare and unusual use/correction of a coloured cancel and a scarce destination item. SG29, Spec. C8.
