Description
Tribal Taxes; Ovambo. Registration card with payments for 1951-1955, paid using a c.1940 1d postage stamp surcharged with the small 5/- in red under the tribe name (with the "bent top of the vertical stroke of 5/-" variety), 1952 and 1953 paid with two ½d 1949 U.P.U. stamps surcharged Ondonga 5/- in red (the Ondonga issue paying the 1953 fee is creased by the fold in the card), 1954 paid with a 1931 ½d black and green bird postage stamp surcharged with the large 5/- over Ovambo in red and 1955 paid with a 1952 Van Riebeck 2d postage stamp surcharged 7/6d under Ovambo in red. This card is doubly rare, being one of only two cards recorded with Ovambo stamps (this the smallest tribe with only 405 taxpayers in 1936) and one of the three cards recorded bearing stamps surcharged for two different tribes.
