Description
An Almonds Nek Casualty, Queen’s South Africa Medal, 1899-1902, type 2, ghost dates, 5 clasps, Tugela Heights, Orange Free State, Relief of Ladysmith, Transvaal, Laing’ Nek, awarded to Private Charles Lynch 2nd Battalion Royal West Surrey Regiment who was wounded on the 11th of June 1900, (2165 Pte C. Lynch, Rl. W. Surrey Regt), impressed naming, toned, edge knock 3 o’clock, fine (1).
Charles Lynch was a highly‑tattooed 19‑year‑old labourer from London when he enlisted into the Royal West Surrey Regiment in Guilford on the 13th of December 1887. He served Home 13th of December 1887 to the 27th of January 1891, Indies 28th of January 1891 to the 13th of February 1894, Malta 14th of February 1894 to the 16th of January 1895, East Indies 17th of January 1895 to the 23rd of March 1898, Home 24th of March 1898 to the 19th of October 1899, South Africa 20th of October 1899 to the 10th of August 1902, Home 11th of August 1902 to the 11th of August 1902, 1 day. He was discharged on the 11th of August 1902.
He was Court Martialled and Imprisoned four times, once for striking a superior officer, losing one year and twenty days’ service towards pension. He was then put on trial and imprisoned a further five times. In total, he served 16 years 202 days, less 1 year 20 as punishment.
He is entitled to the India Medal 1895‑1902 with the clasp Tirah 1897‑98 and Punjab Frontier 1897‑98, the Queen’s South Africa Medal with 5 clasps and the King’s South Africa Medal. He is listed on page 434 of Alexander M. Palmer’s Boer War Casualty Roll 1899‑1902 which states: ‘Lynch C 2165 Pte. Wounded Almonds Nek 11th of June 1900 2 RW Surrey’.
